How many days do you need in Flåm?

One or two nights is enough to experience Flåm itself, but many travellers stay longer to explore the surrounding fjords and mountain villages. An overnight stay gives you time to enjoy the Flåm Railway, take a fjord cruise, and experience the village after most day visitors have departed. If you're exploring western Norway more broadly, Flåm also combines well with Bergen, Oslo and the Sognefjord region.

When is the best time to visit Flåm?

Flåm can be visited year-round, but the experience changes with the seasons. Summer offers long daylight hours, green valleys and the widest choice of fjord cruises and activities, while autumn brings colourful hillsides and fewer visitors. Winter transforms the surrounding mountains with snow, creating a quieter atmosphere and a different perspective on the famous railway journey. Our guide to the best time to travel in Norway explains what to expect throughout the year.

How do you get to Flåm?

Flåm is one of Norway's easiest fjord destinations to reach by public transport. Most visitors arrive via the Bergen Railway to Myrdal before connecting to the Flåm Railway, while others arrive by fjord ferry from Bergen or by road through western Norway. Many of our itineraries combine rail, ferry and scenic drives to create a seamless journey through the fjords. You can also learn more in our guide to Highlights of Norway.

Is Flåm worth visiting?

Yes, particularly if you want to experience Norway's fjords without needing to organise complex transport yourself. Flåm combines one of the world's most scenic railway journeys with easy access to the Aurlandsfjord and Sognefjord, making it one of the most convenient bases for exploring western Norway. While the village itself is small, its location makes it an ideal stopping point on a wider fjord journey.

What is the Flåm Railway?

The Flåm Railway is a 20-kilometre rail journey connecting Flåm on the fjord with Myrdal high in the mountains. It climbs one of the steepest standard-gauge railway lines in the world, passing waterfalls, deep valleys and tunnels carved into the mountainside, making it one of Norway's best-known rail experiences. Read our complete guide to the Flåm Railway, or discover more of Norway's best train journeys.

What is there to do around Flåm?

Flåm is an excellent base for exploring the Sognefjord region. Popular experiences include cruising the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, hiking or cycling through the surrounding valleys, visiting nearby Aurland and Stegastein Viewpoint, and continuing through western Norway by rail or ferry. Many of our Norwegian fjord tours combine Flåm with Bergen, the Sognefjord and other iconic fjord destinations for a broader exploration of the region.
