Stockholm boasts an incredible archipelago of islands and inlets that reach all the way out to the Bothnian Bay (Bottenviken). A day cruise out into the Stockholm archipelago on one of the beautiful old ships is a popular outing. The old part of town (Gamla Stan) is a maze of small alleyways full of restaurants, bars and trinket shops.
Stockholm was founded in 1250 and has long been Sweden's cultural, political and economic centre. The city is known for its beauty, expanses of clean water and its mixture of baroque, medieval and renaissance inspired architecture. Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and the second most visited city in Scandinavia after Copenhagen.
Stockholm, one of the most beautiful capitals in the world, is built on 14 islands connected by 57 bridges. The beautiful buildings, the greenery, the fresh air and the proximity to the water are distinctive traits of this city. The Royal National City Park, (the first National City Park in the world), is a green space that breathes for the city, and a constant presence in the crush of the city.
With its 750 year history and rich cultural life, Stockholm offers a wide selection of world-class museums and attractions. Most of the city's attractions can be reached on foot, and there’s a good chance of experiencing a lot of things in a short time.
Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport is situated 40 km north of the city centre. The Arlanda Express Train is the fastest way into town, it takes 20 minutes and costs approximately 260SEK one way, or 490SEK return (2016 prices). Prices at the taxi stands currently range from 450SEK (Transfer Taxi) to 520SEK. Generally, you can freely choose among the waiting taxis or ask the operator for a specific company. A taxi ride to central Stockholm takes approximately 40 minutes.
Walking is the best way to see the city, and a lot of places are close enough for that too. The public transportation in Stockholm is efficient and includes buses, trams, trains and metro.
