4 days - Short stay in Tórshavn with day tours exploring the Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands are just a short flight from Iceland, yet they're way off the standard traveller's radar.
Adrift in the frothing swells of the North Atlantic, this mysterious 18-piece jigsaw puzzle of islands is at once ancient and very modern. The proud, long-suffering Faroese character has been forged from Viking blood, Christian piety, Scandinavian openness and an awe for the humbling nature that's all around.
When visiting the Faroes, you are never more than 5km (3 miles) away from the ocean. The countryside is dominated by steep mountains and there are about 80,000 sheep and some 2 million pairs of seabirds, including the largest colony of storm petrels in the world, puffins and gannets.
This short tour of the Faroes takes you out the bird cliffs of Mykines, the beautiful village of Saksun with its natural amphitheatre of cliffs and the village of Gjógv. You will enjoy a tour of the old town and explore the old-world charm of Tórshavn. Stay at a boutique luxury hotel on the water's edge.

Day 2 - Day tour to the historic village of Kirkjubøur, Saksun and Gjógv
After breakfast, you will be met at your hotel and driven to the historic village of Kirkjubøur, the southernmost village on Streymoy. Here is the country's most important historical site with the ruins of the Magnus Cathedral from around 1300 and the Saint Olav's Church from 12th century. Visit the old farmhouse Kirkjubøargarður from 11th century, which is still occupied by the same family for 17 generations.
Then drive to the beautiful village of Saksun with its natural amphitheatre of cliffs and stunning nature. During low tides it is also possible to walk along the sandy beach to the ocean.
After exploring Saksun, your next stop is the village of Tjørnuvík, the most northerly village on Streymoy and now popular with surfers...yes you heard correctly...surfers!
Tjørnuvík also has one of the oldest Viking burial grounds where you can see the original burial stones. Take time here to enjoy your packed lunch whilst admiring the view of the "Giant and Hag" rock formations on the headland and learn about the legend behind the rocks.
Drive to the highest point on the Faroe Islands and descend into the beautiful and picturesque village of Gjógv. Here you may also get the opportunity to take coffee and cake with the locals. Return to Tórshavn in the late afternoon.

SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL:
The Faroe Islands have a goal of being 100% powered by renewable energy by 2030. Due to its position as an isolated archipelago they are able to make use of hydro, tides and waves, (to a certain extent) solar energy, and 15 years ago they constructed their first windmill park.
Your hotel embraces this ethos and all the energy they consume comes from their own geothermal source. In the grounds at the front of the hotel there are two boreholes reaching a depth of 200 metres. The hotel also prides themselves on using locally sourced produce where possible and aim to use eco-friendly cleaning products.
