Beyond Santa Claus Village: where to spend Christmas in Lapland

Quieter Christmas destinations across Lapland, with private Santa visits, glass-roofed cabins and fewer crowds than Rovaniemi.

For many travellers, Rovaniemi and Santa Claus Village are where a Lapland Christmas begins and ends. Rovaniemi calls itself Santa's official hometown, and the idea of meeting him there is hard to resist. In December, though, the reality can be different from what you'd imagine.

Finland-Rovaniemi-Santa-Claus-Village-crowds-outside

Santa Claus Village receives around 600,000 visitors a year, and at peak times up to 6,000 people a day pass through Santa's main post office alone. December brings roughly a quarter of Rovaniemi's winter visitors, and numbers have been growing year on year. In practice, that means busy streets, long queues and a visit that can feel more commercial than personal. Accommodation for Christmas week also books up many months ahead.

Finland-Rovaniemi-Santa-Claus-Village-crowds-inside

Rovaniemi remains the most famous name, but luckily it's not the only place to meet Santa. Across Lapland, smaller villages and wilderness resorts offer private Santa visits, darker skies and room to breathe. If you want a calmer, more personal Christmas, look beyond Rovaniemi. Santa, after all, has more than one home in the north.

Why we recommend looking beyond Rovaniemi for Christmas

Quieter, more personal Santa visits

In smaller Lapland villages, Santa visits usually take place in secluded forest cabins rather than busy attractions. Each family has its own time with Santa, without a queue waiting outside. Our guide to meeting Santa in Finnish Lapland explains how a private visit works.

A slower pace and local traditions

Beyond the big-name attractions, Lapland's smaller communities move at a slower pace. Reindeer sleigh rides and husky safaris set off into the forest from the village, festive meals are shared by the fire, and on a reindeer farm visit you may hear a herder explain how the animals are cared for through the dark months.

Darker skies for the Northern Lights

Away from the lights of Rovaniemi, the skies are darker, and the further north you travel, the more often the Northern Lights appear overhead. Ivalo, Muonio and Kilpisjärvi are all good bases, and many stays have glass-roofed cabins or igloos, so you can watch from bed if the sky clears. The Northern Lights are always a chance, never a promise.

Äkäslompolo sits by a frozen lake beneath the Ylläs fells, with wooden cabins, small local restaurants and forest trails leaving straight from the village. It feels calm and traditional, especially in the lead-up to Christmas.

On our small group tours here, Santa Day is spent at the elves' forest village. Each family travels by snowmobile sleigh, then reindeer, to a private visit in Santa's cabin, and children can try snowmobiling on a children's track.

Santa visits take place in a cabin in the forest, reached by a sleigh pulled by snowmobile, with time for the children to share their wishes.

Highlights

In return, it offers a quieter, more cultural Christmas, with Finnish traditions, gentle winter activities and good value for families with younger children.

Children meet Santa Claus, the Finnish Joulupukki, during the stay.

Highlights

  • Family-friendly Christmas program
  • A meeting with Santa
  • Finnish traditions and winter activities
  • Good value for money

Christmas beyond Finnish Lapland

Lapland continues across the border. In Swedish Lapland, the family-run Lapland Guesthouse in Kangos, about two hours from Kiruna, combines ice fishing, husky and reindeer days with a Christmas Eve dinner, and a visit to the ICEHOTEL on the way. In Norway, our Festive Adventure in Norway pairs nights at a lodge on the Alta River with one night in an ice room at the Igloo Hotel. Neither includes a Santa visit, so they suit couples and families with older children.

A different way to experience Christmas in Lapland

Santa has more than one home in the north. Choosing a quieter part of Lapland gives your family a private visit, darker skies for the Northern Lights and a calmer week around it. If meeting Santa is the heart of your trip, it is worth looking beyond Santa Claus Village.
