Visiting Hvammsvík Hotsprings
This new hot springs centre has eight natural hot springs that evolve into the ocean with temperatures ranging from ocean temperatures (around 10°C) to 42°C in the old original hot spring. It is included in many of our tours and has been awarded 'best thing to do in the world' by TIMEOUT magazine, 2023.
Only a 45 minute drive from Reykjavík on the main road north towards Akureyri and Snæfellsnes, this brand new hot-springs has become our new favourite spot in Iceland and is included in many of our self-drive and independent Iceland tours. It is beautifully designed to feel very natural, and could not fit in the surroundings better. The complex has been done very tastefully, and the landscape around is also stunning. The hotpools vary from ca. 36C to 40C, and you can also take a dip in the sea to cool down.
You must pre-book to enter the area (including the cafe) and included in the admission is unlimited access to all the facilities that you can enjoy at your own leisure. You can dip into all of the eight natural hot springs, the steam bath, the outdoor & indoor facilities, jump into the ocean, free use of paddle boards or simply chill on the black beach or go for a hike in the surrounding areas. We recommend that you try the outdoor changing rooms like the locals where you shower under the open sky.
There is a cafe with small but excellent menu with fish soup (gorgeous), sandwiches and cake. Again, tasty & good quality. Stormur Bistro & Bar also serves local drinks such as an energising wellness shot filled with astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant harvested from seaweed.
We can also arrange for you to stay overnight near the hot springs. There is four different types of houses, set around the magnificent landscape. Most are self-catering with hot tubs, BBQ's and entertainment areas.
