Abisko

Abisko, in the middle of the Aurora zone, see the Aurora Borealis.

Located about 95 km west of Kiruna, the small village of Abisko sits on the edge of Abisko National Park and is one of Scandinavia’s most famous locations for viewing the Northern Lights. Thanks to its position near Lake Torneträsk and the surrounding mountain range, the area often experiences clearer skies than many other parts of northern Lapland.

This unique microclimate, sometimes referred to as the “blue hole of Abisko”, means cloud cover can break up here even when nearby regions remain overcast. As a result, Abisko has become one of the most reliable destinations in Sweden for aurora viewing, although of course the Northern Lights can never be guaranteed.

One of the most popular experiences in the area is visiting the Aurora Sky Station, located on Mount Nuolja above the village. Visitors reach the station by chairlift before enjoying spectacular views over the surrounding mountains and Lake Torneträsk. Guided presentations explain the science behind the Northern Lights and the natural phenomena that create them.

During winter evenings, the Aurora Sky Station offers guided aurora experiences, where guests can learn about solar activity, the Earth’s magnetic field and the atmospheric conditions that produce the Aurora Borealis.

Beyond Northern Lights viewing, Abisko National Park offers excellent opportunities for winter activities such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and photography. In summer, the park becomes a gateway to hiking routes including the Kungsleden (King’s Trail), one of Sweden’s most famous long-distance trekking routes.

Abisko is easily reached from Kiruna by train or road, making it one of the most popular day trips or overnight extensions from the town.
