Kuusamo is one of Finland’s leading nature tourism destinations, located in the northeastern part of the country close to the Russian border. Surrounded by forests, rivers and rolling fells, the region is known for its pristine landscapes and year-round outdoor adventures.
Just outside the town lies Ruka, one of Finland’s most popular ski and holiday resorts. The lively alpine-style village offers excellent downhill skiing, cross-country trails and a wide range of winter activities. In summer and autumn, the surrounding forests and hills attract hikers, cyclists and nature lovers exploring Finland’s vast wilderness.
The region is also home to Oulanka National Park, famous for its dramatic river valleys, rapids and hiking trails such as the Karhunkierros (Bear’s Trail), one of Finland’s best known trekking routes.

Kuusamo Airport (KAO) is located about 10 minutes from the centre of Kuusamo and approximately 25 minutes from the Ruka resort. Regular flights connect the airport to Helsinki, making the region easily accessible for visitors travelling to eastern Lapland and northern Finland.
Kuusamo also provides access to nearby destinations such as Posio, known for its wilderness lakes and Riisitunturi National Park, as well as routes into the wider Lapland region.
