Jökulsárlón Glacier

Jökulsárlón is Iceland's deepest lake and one of the most extraordinary sights on the south coast: a glacial lagoon at the foot of Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet of Vatnajökull, Europe's largest ice cap by volume, where icebergs calved from the glacier drift slowly towards the sea. They gather again across the road on Diamond Beach, where the ice washes up on black sand and catches the light like scattered glass. It is right on the Ring Road, which makes it one of the easiest of Iceland's great natural wonders to reach.

Where is Jökulsárlón?

On Iceland's south coast, right on the Ring Road, about 370 km southeast of Reykjavík, roughly a five-hour drive. It works as a long day trip, but it rewards an overnight stay nearby.

When is the best time to visit?

It is striking year-round. Sunrise and sunset bring soft, pink light on the ice, and dark storm skies make the blue-white icebergs glow. Summer offers the midnight sun and boat trips on the lagoon; winter brings the chance of the Northern Lights overhead and nearby ice caves.

Can you take a boat trip on the lagoon?

Yes, in the warmer months. Amphibian and Zodiac boat trips run roughly from May to October, weaving among the icebergs. Outside that season, and at any time of year, the lagoon is just as rewarding from the shore.

What else is nearby?

Diamond Beach sits directly across the Ring Road, where icebergs from the lagoon wash up on the black sand. Seals are often seen in the lagoon throughout the year, and the wider Vatnajökull National Park stretches inland.

Is it safe to walk on the ice?

Admire the icebergs from the shore, and never climb onto them. They are unstable and can roll without warning, tipping anyone on top into freezing water.

How long should I allow?

Give yourself at least an hour or two to take in both the lagoon and Diamond Beach. There is a car park at the site, and a seasonal café.
