Bodø
Close to the Lofoten Islands and a gateway to the islands.
If travelling by train in Norway, Bodø is the end station in the north and a great place to see the Midnight Sun or Northern Lights without getting on a plane. Although Bodø has an airport and you can fly here when visiting the Lofoten Islands or if you are travelling further north.
The municipality of Bodø has lots of wilderness to offer hikers. 10 kilometres north of Bodø lies the popular recreation area Geitvågen. The area is inhabited by a large number of White-tailed Eagles. There are 17 nature reserves in the area. You can easily explore the area and it is great for kids.
Nearby Saltstraumen is the site of the world’s strongest tidal current, which creates epic whirlpools and draws an abundance of fish. Explore local churches and herb gardens, and don’t miss the excellent Aviation Museum.
