  • The iconic Flåm Railway, framed by frozen waterfalls and snow-dusted valleys
  • A fjord cruise offering a quieter, more atmospheric winter experience
  • Overnight stays in cosy, historic hotels

How the journey works

  • Transport between trains, boats and buses is self-guided
  • Accommodation, reservations and winter-appropriate routing are arranged by 50 Degrees North
  • Timing is adjusted to ensure Flåm is visited during daylight hours

This itinerary is ideal for travellers seeking a calm, scenic winter journey without extreme cold or activities.

Day 3 - Snowshoe hiking to Stegastein or winter fjordsafari

Today you will enjoy a guided winter fjordsafari. Experience the Aurlandsfjord, the UNESCO world heritage Nærøyfjord and the charming little village of Undredal during wintertime. The many waterfalls will be frozen solid, the fjord is calm, the water clear and the snow lies just like frosting on the high, steep mountains. In Undredal we will visit the local shop where you will be served some hot beverages and hear from one of the locals what life is really like living along the fjord. Here you will also have the opportunity to sample and buy the award winning local goat cheese. This trip is available from November to March.

Another alternative is a guided hike into the local mountains, for an exceptional view of the fjord at Stegastein viewpoint in Aurland. Experience how it is to hike on traditional snowshoes. The spectacular landscape has shaped the way of life here for generations and you will stop several times during the tour to share the guides' passion and knowledge about the area. As on traditional Norwegian snowshoe hikes, hot beverages will be served to warm you up. The trip is suitable for beginners and is a fun way to access nature during the winter season. General fitness is required, but no experience is needed. This trip is available from February to March.

This evening, be sure to head out to Ægir Brewpub for a Viking dinner or a local ale (optional cost).

Day 4 - Train journey from Flåm to Bergen

The day starts with a spectacular 2-hour fjord cruise from Flåm to the tiny fjord village of Gudvangen. Enjoy the magnificent views of the Aurlandsfjord & the Næroyfjord - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Gudvangen you will be met by a private van for a guided journey to Bergen. This takes you through the beautiful Stalheim canyon with the Stalheimskleiven hairpin road (May to September), into Voss and then drive into Bergen.

Bergen is known as the "The Gateway to the Fjords of Norway" and it is a lively town with small-town charm and international feel. We recommend a walking tour via the famous fish market and along the Bryggen, the old Hanseatic wharf which is architecturally unique and listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Also worth a visit is the Fløibanen funicular which will take you to Mount Fløyen for the best views over the town.
