Senja

Senja is one of Northern Norway’s most dramatic and lesser-known islands, often described as a quieter alternative to the Lofoten Islands. Located north of Tromsø, the island is known for its rugged mountains, deep fjords, colourful fishing villages and winding coastal roads. Often called 'Norway in miniature', Senja captures many of the country’s most iconic landscapes in one compact island – from sharp alpine peaks and sheltered fjords to white sandy beaches and traditional coastal communities.

During summer, Senja is a spectacular destination to explore under the midnight sun. Hiking trails lead through mountain ridges and along the coastline, while boat excursions reveal hidden fjords, seabird colonies and rich marine wildlife. The long daylight hours allow plenty of time to explore the island’s scenic routes and small fishing villages.

Autumn brings quieter landscapes and the return of darker nights. This is an ideal time to search for the Northern Lights while enjoying crisp air, colourful tundra and opportunities for wildlife encounters. Senja’s remote coastal setting and minimal light pollution make it an excellent base for aurora viewing.

In winter, Senja becomes a true Arctic wilderness. Snow-covered mountains rise directly from the sea and the long polar nights create perfect conditions for Northern Lights viewing. Visitors can combine aurora watching with winter activities such as wildlife safaris, fjord excursions and cosy evenings overlooking the dramatic coastline.
