Malmö
Malmö - Scandinavia's most talked about cityscape
Malmö is Sweden's third-largest city and, since the opening of the Øresund Bridge in 2000, one of the most easily reached from Copenhagen. The two cities sit just 20 minutes apart by train, connected by a crossing that has since become one of the most recognisable structures in Nordic television.
The city's most striking landmark is the Turning Torso, a 190-metre residential skyscraper designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2005. Its form, nine stacked segments twisted 90 degrees from base to top, is based on one of Calatrava's own sculptures of a twisting human figure. It sits in the waterfront district of Västra Hamnen, which also offers beaches, cycling routes, and views across the Øresund to Denmark.
Malmö's old town, with its cobblestone streets and medieval square, is a short distance from the waterfront and easy to explore on foot or by bike. The city is compact, varied, and often overlooked in favour of Stockholm, which makes it all the more rewarding to spend time in.
For fans of The Bridge, Malmö is where much of the series was filmed. The full story is on our dedicated Bridge page.
