4 Ways to Experience an Authentic Scandinavian Summer
Explore the essence of a Scandinavian summer with serene lakeside retreats, vibrant archipelago adventures, scenic countryside drives, and lively music festivals, all offering a genuine taste of the region's summertime charm.
Growing up in Finland, thoughts of childhood summers evoke a deeply nostalgic image of a lakeside cottage, where life seamlessly intertwined with nature's simplicity. These idyllic memories, from a time when life was blissfully off-grid, offer a window into the essence of Scandinavian summer — a season defined by a profound connection to nature and the joy of simple pleasures. Even as modern conveniences have been introduced, the core experiences of Scandinavian summer retain their timeless charm.
1. Hide Away and Relax at a Summer Cottage
Having grown up in Finland, the thought of summer is instinctively tied to the image of a summer cottage by a lake or a river. Up until about 15 years ago, these cottages were typically off-grid, meaning that summer holidays and weekends were spent swimming (often stark naked), fishing, rowing boats in the cool waters near the cottage, exploring nearby forests and countryside, enjoying saunas, and reading in a quiet corner, preferably in a hammock. As an adult in our technology-infused world, these memories are tinged with nostalgia and a touch of awe. The absence of phones, fridges, or showers (the river or lake served that purpose) never bothered anyone — young or old — and now the imagery seems blissfully simple and close to nature.
Fortunately, not much has changed in the essence of these summer cottages. Many now have electricity, fridges, and the means to charge our precious electronics—if we so choose. Yet, the instinctive yearning to retreat from our busy lives and recharge through the simple rhythms of cottage life endures. It is a Scandinavian tradition that continues to thrive and is accessible to visitors as well.
2. Catch a Ferry to the Archipelagos
Another nostalgia-infused, yet still relevant, aspect of a Scandinavian summer is taking a ferry to the archipelagos to enjoy some fresh air and sparkling waters. There’s something uniquely different about being at sea, with the sun above and an endless horizon ahead, compared to life at a summer cottage (though many colourful cottages are scattered along the shoreline). While the forest-covered lakeside cottage has a reflective, inward quality, the vastness of the sea and the archipelago evokes a sense of excitement and joy. It’s the warm, salty breeze on a sun-kissed face that makes the experience special. The perfect end to such a day is a fresh seafood meal near the harbour!
Fortunate for our travellers, you can try it and judge for yourself, for example through our 5-day 'Stockholm Archipelago' tour.
3. Drive Through the Sleepy Countryside
Having spent around 20 years in Finland, with parents who loved to socialise and numerous towns to call home, my summers are rich with memories of driving through the countryside to visit family and friends. The unique beauty of a northern summer is that driving can be done at any hour, thanks to the near-perpetual daylight — particularly the further north you go. An hours-long drive through green fields and forests along quiet, almost deserted roads feels perfectly natural, even peaceful and desirable. Depending on the direction — north, south, east, or west — the scenery and landscape constantly change. I truly believe that a country reveals itself most vividly through the window of a car or train.

4. Get Your Groove On at a Music Festival
Although some Scandinavian music festivals have grown into major international events, drawing large crowds, many still offer a unique and authentic glimpse into local culture. As a young adult in Finland, music festivals were an integral part of my summers, providing not just entertainment but a deep connection to the vibrant cultural fabric of the region. The endless array of festivals across the three official summer months offers something for everyone, from intimate local gatherings to grand performances.
For those seeking family-friendly or mature audience experiences, consider the Flow Festival in Helsinki, Finland, held in August. Known for its eclectic mix of music and arts, the Flow Festival blends cutting-edge performances with a welcoming atmosphere that’s perfect for all ages. Similarly, the Førde Traditional and World Music Festival in Førde, Norway, taking place in July, celebrates a diverse range of musical genres from around the globe, while staying rooted in traditional Norwegian music. This festival is particularly noted for its community spirit and cultural richness, offering an enriching experience for attendees of all ages.
Music festivals in Scandinavia not only showcase a diverse array of musical talent but also provide a window into the region’s unique cultural traditions and contemporary life. Each festival has its own character, reflecting the local spirit and community values. Whether you’re drawn to the modern, eclectic vibes of Helsinki or the traditional melodies of Førde, there’s a festival that will resonate with your interests.
