Day 3 - Snowshoe hiking to Stegastein or winter fjordsafari

Today you will enjoy a guided winter fjordsafari. Experience the Aurlandsfjord, the UNESCO world heritage Nærøyfjord and the charming little village of Undredal during wintertime. The many waterfalls will be frozen solid, the fjord is calm, the water clear and the snow lies just like frosting on the high, steep mountains. In Undredal we will visit the local shop where you will be served some hot beverages and hear from one of the locals what life is really like living along the fjord. Here you will also have the opportunity to sample and buy the award winning local goat cheese. This trip is available from November to March.

Another alternative is a guided hike into the local mountains, for an exceptional view of the fjord at Stegastein viewpoint in Aurland. Experience how it is to hike on traditional snowshoes. The spectacular landscape has shaped the way of life here for generations and you will stop several times during the tour to share the guides' passion and knowledge about the area. As on traditional Norwegian snowshoe hikes, hot beverages will be served to warm you up. The trip is suitable for beginners and is a fun way to access nature during the winter season. General fitness is required, but no experience is needed. This trip is available from February to March.

This evening, be sure to head out to Ægir Brewpub for a Viking dinner or a local ale (optional cost).

Day 4 - Fjord cruise to Gudvangen, then train to Bergen

The day begins on the water. A two-hour fjord cruise from Flåm carries you along the Aurlandsfjord and into the narrow, UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, where steep mountain walls rise directly from the water on either side and the winter stillness gives the landscape a quality that is quite unlike any other season. In winter the waterfalls are frozen solid against the cliff faces and the fjord surface is glasslike and calm.

At Gudvangen, a private van meets you for a guided transfer through to Bergen. The route passes through the Stalheim canyon, one of western Norway's most dramatic valley landscapes, before continuing through Voss and descending toward the coast.

Bergen needs little introduction. Known as Norway's gateway to the fjords, it is a city with genuine character, shaped by its centuries as a Hanseatic trading port and still carrying that history in its streets and buildings. The old wharf at Bryggen, with its distinctive rows of painted timber facades, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is best explored on foot at a slow pace. The fish market nearby is lively and worth a visit, and the Fløibanen funicular up to Mount Fløyen gives you the best view over the city and the seven mountains that surround it.

Restaurants to try in Oslo

Oslo's restaurant scene reflects the depth and ambition you would expect from a Scandinavian capital. Drawing on the principles of the New Nordic Food Movement, many of the city's best kitchens build their menus around wild, organic and locally sourced Norwegian ingredients, turning traditional flavours into something genuinely contemporary. But the range here is wide, from long-established institutions to casual neighbourhood spots that reveal a different side of the city altogether.
