Day 2 - Explore Qullissat and paddleboard on the inlet lake

Enjoy breakfast at the camp. Today you have a choice of two activities. The guide will meet with you after dinner on the day of arrival to discuss your preferences.
Activities include fishing, taking a refreshing swim in the Arctic Ocean, paddleboarding among icebergs, hiking through breathtaking landscapes, whale safaris, and meeting the Greenlandic dogs. Immerse yourself in the local culture as you enjoy coffee with the locals, fish together, and learn traditional techniques like drying or smoking fish. All activities are individually adjusted to meet interest and fitness levels.

Here’s what a typical day could include:

In the morning set out for Qullissat, the haunting ghost town on Qeqertarsuaq Island that once thrived as a coal mining hub. Established in 1924 and abandoned in 1968, Qullissat’s empty structures evoke the quiet resilience and history of Greenland’s people. The journey includes a transfer by dinghy, adding an element of adventure, as getting in and out can sometimes be tricky due to the tides and rocky shoreline.

In the afternoon paddleboard on the Inlet Lake. A short journey north from Saqqaq reveals a hidden saltwater inlet. Paddle through its glassy surface, surrounded by silence, save for the echo of water and wind. Ashore, traces of ancient Inuit life lie scattered, the remains of turf huts and whale bones in quiet testament. In this place, history and nature breathe as one, whispering tales to those who pause to listen.

After dinner, we will make a nice bonfire either outside the dining tent or on the beach and end the day with drinks - or maybe the famous Greenlandic coffee.

Day 3 - Hike near Bird Mountain and meet the Greenlandic sled dogs

After breakfast, join any two activities of your choice.
A sample day might look like this:
In the company of seabirds, walk the storied shore near Bird Mountain, with their cries weaving an ancient rhythm against the landscape. The path may reveal signs of an Arctic fox, darting in and out, a whisper of life amid vast wilderness. Here, remnants of turf houses linger, silent witnesses to the lives of those who called this shore home until 1913. End the journey with a traditional BBQ featuring local ingredients, cooked over an open fire on a flat rock, a quiet homage to time and history under the Arctic sky.

In the afternoon, join a short, one-hour visit to meet Greenlandic sled dogs and learn about their role in traditional Arctic life. These dogs, distinct from other breeds, are well adapted to Greenland’s harsh winters, and their role in daily life provides a unique insight into the region’s culture.

Important Information

SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL:

Your luxury tented accommodation is all about getting back to nature and enjoying the solitude of the wilderness. The tipi style tents are simple, yet warm, structures and use minimal resources for construction. Each tipi is equipped with its own bathroom, hot showers and an eco-toilet. They operate a 'leave no trace policy' with no permanent structures on site and a strong focus on renewable energy. There are low carbon activities on site including kayaking, hiking, arctic swimming, paddle-boarding, or fishing trips.

Food is an important element of your stay, and the on-site award-winning chef invites guests to get involved in the dining experience, which can include foraging for herbs amongst the camp. Ingredients are all freshly sourced nearby, and include various fish, mussels, arctic mushrooms, as well as herbs like angelica, arctic thyme, Labrador tea and various berries.

Greenland is steadily rising in popularity, but it is keen to ensure that growth is slow and there is a strong desire to avoid over-tourism. One of the key focus's is to ensure that jobs are prioritised to local residents, and with over 90% of the population of the island being indigenous Inuit, it's vital that local cultures are protected and preserved. Tourism, if done correctly, will protect and celebrate the local culture while also providing the vital source of revenue that they need.

Your accommodation is proud to be the only company offering a camp product entirely based on local people residing in the country. They have in-depth knowledge about the country, the region, the nature and the people, and your experience will reflect this.

ANIMAL WELFARE POLICY:

At 50 Degrees North, animal welfare is a top priority during all our tours and packages. We carefully select suppliers who adhere to strict animal welfare standards, ensuring that wildlife interactions are respectful and comply with local, national, and international regulations. We avoid offering excursions that involve captive wildlife, except where they are properly regulated, and all activities are designed to minimise disturbance to natural ecosystems. Our travellers are educated on responsible, including responsible animal interactions, through our 'Responsible Travel Tips' for travellers, and our guides are trained to lead by example, promoting ethical conduct towards both wild and domesticated animals. By prioritising animal welfare in every aspect of our tours, we ensure that your travel experience is both enjoyable and ethically sound. Read our article on Animal Welfare to learn more.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Weather conditions may occasionally affect certain activities, and as a result, the schedule may be adjusted to ensure the best possible experience for all guests. For multi-activity stays, often the order of the activities will be confirmed locally on arrival. Activities might vary slightly in their duration or location due to the weather and local conditions. Any activities that are unable to be re-scheduled due to weather conditions, will be refunded as a general practice, as determined by the activity provider.
