Community Volunteering Days
Launched in 2024, we have committed to having each of our regional offices participate in an annual volunteering day. This provides an opportunity to connect our staff with local communities and organisations that align with our core values. The initiative also strengthens our workplace culture, engaging our team and deepening their connection to our vision and purpose.
Last year’s initiative saw our Australia team spend a day at CERES, an inspiring community city organic farm and environmental education centre. The team rolled up their sleeves for a day of hard graft, helping prepare the site for a new growing season.
In Norway, our team participated in Strandryddeuka 2024, the country’s largest litter cleanup event, which brings together over 40,000 volunteers annually. As part of the initiative, we recorded our findings with the Norwegian Environment Agency, contributing valuable data that informs public policies and helps develop effective solutions to address the issue at its root.
Involving our staff with communities doesn’t stop at volunteering; our team regularly participates in local charity days with travel organisations or similar. For example, representatives from 50 Degrees North’s Australia office joined the celebrations for International Women's Day in 2025, which raised money to support the Women’s Resilience Centre, a vital organisation providing long-term support for women transitioning from crisis care to recovery after domestic abuse, trauma, and loss.
Each year, we also attend the 'Force for Good' event, raising awareness and supporting the Animals Asia Foundation.
Supporting Local
Supporting local businesses is a core value here at 50 Degrees North. Our staff’s weekly wellness lunches are sourced from local eateries, and we have a list of local vendors that we love to support – including fellow B Corp companies!
This principle also applies to our tours, where for every $100 spent with us, $72 on average goes into the local economy (this can be as little as US$5 when compared to mass tourism in developing countries, according to research by UNEP).
The Environment
At 50 Degrees North, we are dedicated to minimising the environmental impact of our office operations and staff activities. Our Green Office Policy outlines key practices for reducing paper and plastic use, prioritising recycled materials, conserving energy and water, and promoting sustainable purchasing (see 'Our Offices' section in our Sustainability Policy). Through our Climate Action Plan, we ensure the use of renewable energy in all our offices (100% in both Australia and Norway). As a result, since 2019, we have successfully reduced emissions from our office operations by an impressive 83%!
We also regularly assess the environmental impact of our staff’s working patterns and have identified commuting as a major source of emissions. To address this, we support flexible work arrangements, enabling many employees to work partially from home and reduce their commuting footprint. Additionally, we have strategically chosen office locations with convenient access to public transport and cycling routes. Our staff travel policies heavily encourage the use of online meetings, but when staff do need to fly, we encourage them to pick the most sustainable route possible (see our guide How to Book a Lower Carbon Flight).
