Ivalo
Ivalo
Nestled in the municipality of Inari in Finnish Lapland, Ivalo is a charming village on the Ivalo River, just 20 kilometres south of Lake Inari. With a population of 3,000, it serves as a vibrant hub for those seeking the thrill of Finnish Lapland's ski resorts and outdoor adventures. Ivalo is swiftly becoming one of our top destinations to witness the mesmerising Northern Lights in Lapland. Our tours, highlighted below, feature stays in Aurora Glass Cabins and journeys through Norway, Sweden, and Finland.
As the administrative centre and largest population hub in the Inari municipality, Ivalo offers the most extensive range of services in northern Lapland. Its well-stocked grocery shops are open every day of the week, from early morning until late at night, including Sundays, ensuring convenience for all visitors.
The Inari area offers unforgettable experiences in nature combined with an authentic introduction to Sámi culture and traditions.
The Sámi people, the only officially recognised indigenous group in the European Union, number around 75,000, with approximately 9,000 in Finland, over 40,000 in Norway, 15,000-20,000 in Sweden, and 2,000 in Russia. Despite being spread across national borders, the Sámi consider themselves one people belonging to Sápmi or Sámiland, unified by one flag and celebrating their national day on February 6th.
Finland’s Sámi population enjoys linguistic and cultural self-government through their own parliament, located in Sajos in Inari village, and elected every four years. In Lapland’s northernmost municipalities, Sámi students have the right to be educated in their language, supported by immersive cultural daycare centres for young children. Finland recognises three Sámi languages: Northern Sámi, Inari Sámi, and Skolt Sámi.
Though traditional structures like lean-tos and kotas remain integral to Sámi culture, modern Sámi people live in contemporary homes, wear modern clothes, and blend seamlessly with Finns in everyday appearance. However, almost all Sámi possess a traditional dress, beautifully crafted and adorned, worn on significant occasions to represent their family and region.
