It's a good time to travel to Scandinavia with kids & teenagers as a new generation of Nordic playgrounds allowing kids to interact with nature during their city stays are being built. Imaginative play, 'dangerous play' and interacting with nature are encouraged at these playgrounds; in Copenhagen, try Rødkilde park, Garden of the Senses in Fælledparken & the new Valby Nature park.
Ideas for entertaining older children: Give them free range at Tivoli Fun Park, skateboarding & soccer in Fælledparken & bike riding through the expansive bike network of super-cool Copenhagen. Teenagers will also love shopping in this capital - it has the buzz of being the centre of the fashion world...

Stockholm - super cool & super fun:
Kids & teenagers (& mum) will love the ABBA museum in Stockholm with lots of interactive exhibits to enjoy. Jump up on stage with ABBA and sing your heart out - kids will love finding the video online afterwards. Ride the ABBA helicopter and test your sound recording. Our kids spent a good hour sitting transfixed in the Swedish Musical Hall of Fame below the museum with their own electric guitars and fellow visitors playing ABBA songs on the Yamaha pianos.
Just near the ABBA Museum, is the Skansen Open Air Zoo good for all ages and a good wander. Skansen is beautifully located on Royal Djurgården and sports spectacular views over all of Stockholm. The small aquarium is highly recommended for unusual animal lovers - naked mole rats running around in pipes, lemurs who don't move off the path, snapping turtles (great for Deadly 60 fans) and a large range of poisonous South American frogs!
Likewise with Copenhagen, Stockholm feels like the centre of the fashion world - let your teenagers loose in Sweden's own, H&M.

Outdoor kids in Oslo
Nature, nature and some more nature! Oslo is bursting at it's small seams with things green for kids to enjoy. What Oslo lacks in the way of play grounds and amusement parks, they make up for with forests and fjords! During summer, hire a bike to cycle around our favourite island, Bygdøy - picnic on the low cliffs & go crab fishing. Watch sunset on top of Oslo's new Opera house...
Depending on the season, kids can go autumn blueberry picking in the mountains close by or if there is snow on the ground, it is as simple as getting off a local suburban train and tobogganing down the 'corkscrew'. Cross country skiing, watching the locals ski jump at Holmenkollen and drinking hot chocolates at the many delightful mountain top cafes are great things to do with your family in Oslo during winter.
** Note for budget-conscious families: these capitals can be friendly on your hip pocket: plenty of hot dogs, cheaper Chinese restaurants and bakeries for feeding your happy kids. Picnics are very common & Scandinavians also use small outdoor grills that families take down to the park to grill sausages & burgers.
