Sami Autumn
Learn about the food traditions, plant knowledge and cultural life of the Sámi, the indigenous people of northern Europe.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Meet Sámi reindeer herders and hear about their way of life
- Try traditional Sámi food
- Learn about Sámi plant and herbal knowledge
The Sámi often describe nature and culture as inseparable, and their detailed knowledge of the Arctic environment reflects that. Reindeer herders have long drawn on the plants, berries and game of the north for food and for everyday remedies. On this excursion, Sámi hosts share some of that knowledge, along with a taste of their culinary traditions and an introduction to the herbs gathered from Arctic nature. You will also hear about Sámi handicraft (duodji) and listen to joik, the traditional Sámi form of song, and to stories drawn from Sámi history, including the role of the noaidi in Sámi spiritual tradition.
As the excursion crosses the Nordkyn peninsula by bus, your guide describes the landscape, its seasons and weather, and daily life in the two fishing villages of Kjøllefjord and Mehamn. The Arctic may look sparse to a visitor, but it has long supported those who know it well, and interest in traditional knowledge of northern plants has grown in recent years. Reindeer herding, duodji and a close relationship with the land remain central to Sámi life today, and traditional foods such as reindeer meat, fish and berries are still an important part of the Sámi diet.
