Bodø
Close to the Lofoten Islands and a gateway to the islands.
Bodø is the northernmost stop on the Norwegian railway network, sitting just above the Arctic Circle in the county of Nordland. For travellers heading north, it is both a practical transit point and a destination worth time in its own right, a small Arctic city with world-class nature on its doorstep, a proud fishing heritage, and a cultural life that punched well above its weight when it became the European Capital of Culture in 2024, the first city north of the Arctic Circle to hold the title.
The year brought more than 1,000 events across the city and the five regions of Nordland county, with a strong emphasis on Sámi culture and Arctic cuisine. Much of what the year catalysed remains: new exhibition spaces, a more confident arts scene, and the Parkenfestivalen, one of northern Norway's most established summer music festivals.
The city is also the gateway to the Lofoten Islands, connected by ferry and by plane, making it a natural base for the wider region.
Just outside the city, Saltstraumen is one of the most striking natural phenomena in Norway. A 490-metre-wide channel through which 370 million cubic metres of water flow four times a day, it is the world's strongest tidal current, creating powerful whirlpools up to ten metres in diameter. The best way to experience it is by timing a visit to high tide, or taking a RIB boat safari from Bodø directly into the current.
The Norwegian Aviation Museum is one of Norway's most engaging specialist museums. Shaped like a propeller and divided into civil and military wings, it spans early Norwegian flight, commercial aviation, and Cold War-era fighter jets and surveillance aircraft. Bodø's strategic position close to the Soviet border gives many of the exhibits particular weight, including the U-2 spy plane famously shot down in 1960.
Ten kilometres north of the city, the Geitvågen recreation area offers easy hiking in a landscape inhabited by white-tailed eagles, and is well suited to families. The surrounding municipality has 17 nature reserves.
Bodø is part of a remarkable cluster of Nordic and Baltic cities to have held the European Capital of Culture title. Read the full story: European Capitals of Culture in the Nordic and Baltic region
