The Nordic countries are renowned for their awe-inspiring natural beauty: The Northern Lights, serene snow-covered landscapes, expansive archipelagos, and the mystical midnight sun. These elements evoke emotions that often transcend words, stirring something deep within us. But beyond the breathtaking wonders of nature, there exists a different kind of beauty — one shaped by human hands. The Old Towns of Eastern Europe offer a remarkable, often profound sense of awe that rivals nature’s most stunning displays.
The historic centres of the Baltic capitals — Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius — embody a unique architectural elegance that resonates with visitors in ways that are difficult to explain. These cities seem to exist in a timeless realm, where the past lingers in the streets and buildings, inviting us to pause and reflect. Each Old Town, with its carefully preserved structures and deep historical roots, offers a momentary glimpse into another era, where the magic of history is ever-present. It’s no wonder that these cities have been granted UNESCO World Heritage status.
Tallinn (Estonia)
Tallin's Historic Centre (the Old Town) is a charming fusion of medieval serenity and contemporary urban life. The city’s origins date back to the 13th century, when crusading knights established the first castle in the area. From the 13th to the 16th centuries, Tallinn flourished as a major trading hub, and its architecture reflects the wealth of this era. The Old Town has preserved its medieval layout, with narrow cobbled streets and impressive public and private buildings, including the Town Hall, pharmacy, churches, monasteries, and merchants’ residences.
It speaks volumes when an Australian traveller, who explored Finland, northern Sweden, Norway, London, Rome, and Barcelona, declared Tallinn his favourite destination. If you’ve never visited a medieval Old Town, it will offer an entirely unique experience; It's world of its own.
Riga (Latvia)
Riga, the capital city of Latvia, is another stunning, ancient Hanseatic city with a Historic Centre full of charming cobblestone streets. Like Tallinn, it was founded in the early 13th century and became a key centre of trade and commerce between the 13th and 15th centuries. In the 17th century, Riga grew to become the largest provincial city under Swedish rule. By the 19th century, rapid industrialisation led to the city’s expansion, introducing imposing neoclassical wooden buildings and later, remarkable Art Nouveau stone buildings. In fact, Riga’s Art Nouveau architecture is considered unmatched anywhere in the world.
The Historic Centre of Riga is a living, open-air museum that illustrates the course of European history. Our walking tour takes you to landmarks such as the Riga Castle, Dome Cathedral, St. Peter’s Church, the Swedish Gate, the Three Brothers, the Large and Small Guilds, and the Freedom Monument — each with its own unique story to tell.
Vilnius (Lithuania)
The Historic Centre of Vilnius shares many similarities with Tallinn and Riga but has its own distinct charm. Its origins stretch back to 1000 AD, when the first wooden castle was built in the area. By the 13th century, the castle settlement had evolved into a town and become the political heart of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The historic centre comprises three castle areas (Upper, Lower, and Curved) and another area surrounded by a medieval wall. The city’s layout is circular, radiating out from the original castle, with narrow streets dividing the centre into blocks, while larger squares were added later. The historic buildings showcase Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical styles, giving the city its unique character.
Vilnius is home to over 1,200 medieval buildings and 48 churches. Our sightseeing tour will guide you through the hidden gems of Vilnius Cathedral, Gediminas Tower, Peter and Paul Church, St. Anne's Church, the Old University, and the Gates of Dawn, among many other significant sites.
